“Dear NICU Mama, As you navigate life after NICU, always remember that you know your child better than you think you do. From the beginning of your NICU journey, you have had incredible nurses and doctors who have helped you. They have, in many ways, introduced you to your child. They taught you how to touch and hold them, they held your hand through the tears, and they have shown your child such love and devotion. As much as you are thankful for them, it can feel as though they know your child better than you do.

Do not let that initial feeling hold you back. You carried your treasure from the very beginning. You understand your baby in a way that no one can ever hope to know. Trust your gut. Trust your instinct when you leave the walls that have become home. The world might seem overwhelming as you learn to navigate your new life, but remember it will always be you and your baby against the world. You are strong enough to learn this new normal yet again.”

“My journey in the NICU was unexpected. My first (daughter) came six weeks early due to the fast onset of severe preeclampsia. My second (son) was delivered via a scheduled C-section at 37 weeks. His lung collapsed very shortly after delivery. He was taken to the NICU for observation at first and then ended up being placed on a ventilator. Though both deliveries were unexpected, we were blessed to have the same primary nurse for both of our children!”
